COLFAX, Calif. -- A father-son hobby becomes more than bonding after a California teenager discovered a rock that holds 6 ounces of gold. That means the rock, which was discovered by Jacob Hopkins during a fishing trip, has a price tag of $5,500, reported TV station KCRA."I went out there and grabbed it, and I was like 'Oh my gosh that can't be gold -- it is,' and then I ran up to my dad and I showed him," Hopkins said.
The gold nugget was discovered at Rollins Lake, about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento, Calif. Soon after the discovery others arrived, hoping to have the same luck as Jacob."I was like 'Come one come all. There has got to be more,"' said Brandon Stabb, who was searching for gold at the lake with a metal detector.Jacob's father, Mike Hopkins, said he could relate to the tale."I was going to go slew some gold to go to the senior prom, and about the second shovel a 4-ounce gold nugget rolled right in the tip of my shovel," Mike Hopkins said. "I stuck it in my pocket and ran to town."The Hopkins go gold mining every weekend, just for fun.But after Jacob's discovery they may have company. Some locals said Jacob's find may start a gold rush, but that there is enough gold to go around.
