Teen Gets Her Voice Back

When you lose you voice, most of them time if you rest your vocal chords, your voice will eventually come back on its own. But for 15-year-old Molly Kaufman, losing her voice is not an option.

"Being a singer is my life. I've wanted to be a singer forever. I sing books instead of reading them," said Kaufman.

Like most teenagers, talking on her cellphone is a daily thing. That added up over time and her voice eventually became raspy.

"I didn't have a really good range. I could only go really low and sort of high, so it was bad," said Kaufman.

She went to laryngologist Dr David Opperman from Rose Medical Center for help.

"She had been using her voice so much that she had developed small callous-like bumps called singer's nodules. Those nodules were preventing her from reaching the voice range she wanted," said Opperman.

So Opperman decided to use Botox to help.

"It's for cosmetic surgery and not for voices and nodules and stuff so I didn't know anything about it," said Kaufman.

Dr. Opperman performed three Botox injections in the muscles surrounding the nodules formed on Molly's vocal chords. After the procedure, she didn't have her voice for three months.

"What we did with the botox was in a sense, weakened the muscles that close the vocal chords. By doing that, we prevented her from being able to generate the forces on her chords to further injuring them. So we actually forced voice rest," said Opperman.

The injections and rest were what Kaufman needed.

"By giving her the injections, we prevented her from being able to generate the forces on her chords to further injuring them. So we actually forced voice rest." said Kaufman

Right now, Botox is being used for many voice-related injuries. For more information go to www.coloradovoiceclinic.com
