Police ID bank robbery suspect shot, killed by officer near 16th Street Mall

DENVER – The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner released the identity Monday of the bank robbery suspect shot and killed by police near the 16th Street Mall last week.

John Bazemore III, 25, was shot and killed by a Denver Police officer after police say he robbed a downtown bank Friday afternoon.

Police say Bazemore robbed the ANB Bank on the crowded 16th Street Mall and fled the scene.Immediately after the robbery, a person who witnessed the incident flagged down the officer and identified the 25-year-old suspect, who police say fled into a nearby alley.

Police say the pursuing officer followed the suspect ino the alley where the officer fired several shots after giving Bazemore several commands. It's not clear if the suspect drew a weapon during the encounter. Bazemore was pronounced dead at Denver Health later in the evening.

Police said a gun and an undisclosed amount of money were recovered from the scene. Police called the cash "evidence from the bank robbery."

The name of the officer, who police said is assigned to patrol the mall, has not been released. The officer will be on administrative leave until an investigation is complete.
