DENVER – Denver7 and TheDenverChannel.com (KMGH-TV) was awarded the Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence, the Radio Television Digital News Association announced Tuesday.

The Edward R. Murrow Awards are among broadcast and digital journalism’s most prestigious awards, RTDNA says. The organization has handed down the awards since 1971 to small and large radio, television and digital outlets in 14 geographic regions.

The Overall Excellence award recognizes Denver7 and TheDenverChannel.com’s commitment to quality Journalism and a strong commitment to community. In 2018, Denver7 and TheDenverChannel.com launched 360 stories that explored multiple sides of the topics that matter most to Coloradans; news about growth and living in Our Colorado; results-based Contact7 consumer investigations that have righted wrongs for people across the state; and exclusive breaking news from every corner of Colorado that resounded across the nation.

Region 3 includes large-market television news stations from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

“I’m extremely proud of our team and their hard work. This honor speaks to our commitment to unique, relevant content, especially our ‘360’ reporting,” said Denver7 News Director Holly Gauntt. “Viewers want multiple perspectives from a news station they trust. It’s very rewarding to be recognized by our peers for producing compelling content that matters.”

Denver7 and TheDenverChannel.com will automatically be entered into the national competition with other large-market Overall Excellence winners. The national winners will be announced in June.

“The journalists behind this year’s awards have a deep connection to the communities where they live,” said Dan Shelley, RTDNA’s Executive Director. “Their reporting demonstrated a level of care for and awareness of their communities that isn’t always popular to highlight when we talk about journalism. The stories they told go deeper than the surface of problems and celebrations, and gave viewers insight into topics and places they may not encounter in their daily lives. The Edward R. Murrow Awards demonstrate how journalists help us break out of our echo chambers, and contribute to productive public dialogue that brings communities together for positive change.”
