THORNTON, Colo. — As Hurricane Florence begins to batter the Carolinas, help is on the way from all across the country - including here in Colorado.
In Thornton - one family is turning their planned vacation into a mission to help hurricane survivors.
Bottled water and hygiene products may not be what the Coburn's planned to pack-up for their vacation to North Carolina, but it's what feels right at this point.
"We have toothpaste and laundry detergent,” said LeeAnn Coburn. “You know, things that they might need that they've run out of at the grocery store."
The Coburns are on their way to see their newborn granddaughter near Fayetteville, North Carolina.
"And Hurricane Florence decided to join us," LeeAnn said.
Rather than let the storm spoil their plans, Jerry and LeeAnn are turning their vacation into a mission.
“Whatever we can do to help,” LeeAnn said. “It’s not a lot, but it’s something.”
They put the word out through Nextdoor and their church, Risen Savior in Westminster, and within hours - supplies started pouring in.
"I saw their post on Nextdoor one night when I had come home and all of our neighbors seem to do what they need to do to take care of each other," said Angie Selak. “So, I sent my husband to Wal-Mart.”
Collectively, they’ve managed to gather all kinds of things – from hygiene products to water, filling up the extra storage space in their RV that would have been empty otherwise.
A small gesture of kindness that could have a big impact.
"We even had someone who came this morning who wanted to donate $200 to help with gas," LeeAnn said.
"God provides people to care for other people,” said a church member. “Why not do it?"
Risen Savior Church also connected with a few shelters in North Carolina so the Coburns can get the supplies to the right places.
They plan to take the trip across the country slow and arrive after the storm has passed.
